December 2010: BIO BASED PLASTICS NOT SUSTAINABLE
- Scientific research published in the International Journal of LifeCycle Assessment Vol: 15, 284-293 (2010) concludes that bio-basedplastics are not sustainable.
"Although bio-based products have been mostly regarded as asustainable solution for replacing petroleum-based polymers, in mostcases, the amounts of resources and energy required to produce themhave not been taken into account. Before bio-based plastics can berecommended as a preferred option to plastics, a few challenges haveto be overcome. One of the main concerns is reducing the energy usedin the life cycle production of the bio-material from crops."
